Mahama Ayariga, Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has emphasized that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) remains assured of its ability to defeat former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in any future presidential election. He argued that the Ghanaian electorate will assess Dr. Bawumia based on his performance in government rather than any attempts at rebranding. Addressing Parliament, Mr. Ayariga explained that his position reflects the lived realities of citizens under the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, where Dr. Bawumia has served as Vice President.
“The Bawumia that I know, NDC will beat him any day,” Mr Ayariga said, adding that his decision to wear white in the chamber was symbolic. “I am only wearing white to join the NPP in the chamber to celebrate because the Bawumia that I know, NDC can beat him any day.” He added that although he wore white to mark Dr Bawumia’s re-election, he remains optimistic that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would win the 2028 elections.
“I am wearing white to join the NPP in the chamber to celebrate, because the Bawumia that I know, the NDC will beat him any day,” Ayariga said. Dr Bawumia secured 56.48% of the votes in the NPP presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026, with a total of 110,645 votes cast. His closest contender, Kennedy Agyapong, received 46,554 votes, representing 42.08% of the total votes.
