New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer contender and Abetifi MP, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has highlighted simmering tensions among party leaders during Thursday’s Peace Pact ceremony, vowing to restore discipline should he emerge victorious in the January 31 presidential primary. Addressing delegates from Manso Nkwanta and Manso Adubiase at Antoakrom in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Acheampong noted that his composed demeanour at the event helped avert potential confrontations between aspirants.
He observed that the body language of fellow contenders—former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia—reflected strains that might have escalated without careful intervention. “The misunderstanding is at the top. Yesterday [Thursday, January 22], we went to sign a peace pact. I believe that it was God’s intervention that made me sit on the second chair, which was in between number one and number three.
Dr. Bryan Acheampong recounted a tense moment during the Peace Pact ceremony, noting that had he not intervened with the individual seated in chair number one, the situation could have escalated. “I’m sure many of you saw it on television. I encouraged them to smile, but it was clear there are underlying issues within the party. When number one was calmed, number three immediately began to frown. These gestures reflect the dissatisfaction felt by members at the grassroots,” he said.
Addressing delegates, the Abetifi MP stressed that unresolved tensions at the party’s leadership level have fueled discontent among the rank and file. He urged supporters to consider his leadership record and vision for a stronger, more disciplined NPP. “I assure you that if I win the presidential primary on January 31, from February 1, discipline will be restored in the party,” he pledged.
