Govt revokes 278 small-scale mining licenses over regulatory breaches

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has cancelled 278 small-scale mining licenses across the country, citing breaches of mining laws and expired permits. This move, announced by the Ministry’s Spokesperson and Media Relations Officer, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, via Facebook on Thursday, October 23, is part of the government’s renewed push to enforce order and accountability within the small-scale mining industry.

According to Mr. Schandorf, the licenses were revoked from operators who either failed to comply with environmental and safety standards or continued mining after their licenses had expired. The decision underscores Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah’s commitment to restoring discipline to the sector and responds to longstanding concerns about illegal mining—commonly known as galamsey—and its damaging effects on Ghana’s environment and water resources.

This latest action demonstrates the government’s stricter stance on reforms, reinforcing efforts to ensure mining activities are sustainable and environmentally responsible.
