NPP invites proposals for constitutional amendment

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has invited its members and identifiable groups to contribute to the party’s constitutional amendment. In a memo dated April 25, 2025, the party has instructed those who wish to submit proposals to do so either by sending them to the Office of the General Secretary at the Party Headquarters or directly to the Constitutional Amendment Committee through the Committee’s Secretary or via e-mail at nppconstitutionalamendment@gmail.com.

The deadline for submission of all proposals is Friday, May 09, 2025. “The party looks forward to receiving from its members proposals for constitutional reforms, adoption of which will result in the NPP having a Revised Constitution that addresses all the structural and other critical issues confronting the party,” the statement signed by the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, stated.

The memo indicated that the party would hold an Extraordinary National Delegates Conference in July this year, pursuant to article 10(2)(8) of the party Constitution primarily to consider the various amendment proposals which shall be tabled before the Conference in the form of motions for adoption.

Recall

The party, at its National Council meeting held last Wednesday, April 16, 2025, formed a nine-member Constitutional Amendment Committee to review and propose amendments to the party’s constitution. The committee is chaired by the Chairman of the party’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Frank Davies.

The committee members include the Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei; MP for Ofoase Ayiribi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah; a Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Dr Antoinette Tsiboe-Darko; the Volta Regional Chairman of the NPP, Makafui Woanyah, and a former MP, Ebenezer Nartey, as Secretary.

The committee’s mandate includes:

– Identifying provisions of the Party Constitution that require amendments to give effect to the recommendations of the Mike Oquaye Election Review Committee

– Working on the recommendations of the 2021 Constitutional Review Committee chaired by Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin

– Receiving proposals for constitutional amendments from party members and identifiable groups

– Categorising proposals under various Articles and Clauses for ease of reference

– Making appropriate recommendations to guide the debate at the National Annual Delegates Conference.
