The Ministry of the Interior has officially announced that Friday, April 18, and Monday, April 21, 2025, will be statutory public holidays throughout Ghana in celebration of the Easter festivities. In a press release issued on Monday, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak confirmed that both Good Friday and Easter Monday will be recognized as public holidays nationwide.
The announcement coincides with the Christian calendar, highlighting Easter as a significant time for reflection, celebration, and religious observance. Good Friday, which falls on April 18 this year, commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. It is a solemn day for Christians worldwide, traditionally observed with church services, fasting, and prayers. Easter Monday, occurring on April 21, is celebrated the day after Easter Sunday, which marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Ghana, Easter Monday is commonly associated with family gatherings, recreational activities, and outdoor events in various communities.
The Ministry has encouraged all Ghanaians to celebrate the upcoming holidays in line with national laws and cultural traditions. “The public is reminded to observe these holidays in accordance with the country’s laws and customary practices,” the statement emphasized. Easter is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in Ghana, with many citizens traveling to their hometowns or engaging in church activities and social events. Authorities have also advised the public to prioritize safety and responsibility during the long weekend.
