Change of government shouldn’t give the opportunity to misbehave – Asantehene condemns Obuasi incident

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has denounced the recent confrontation between illegal miners and the military at the AngloGold Ashanti site in Obuasi, which led to nine fatalities. After being informed about the event by AngloGold Ashanti officials at Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene voiced his profound concern and disappointment, stating that a change in government should not be an excuse for individuals to misbehave and act unlawfully.

“Doing illegal mining should not be encouraged by anybody not even the government. And the change in government should give people the opportunity to misbehave” the Asantehene said. “We live in a society where the law works and therefore I don’t think this government will let this happen.”

The Asantehene’s remarks follow a violent clash between the military and illegal miners at the AngloGold Ashanti site in Obuasi. This incident resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, with many others injured. He urged the government to promptly address the pressing issue of illegal mining and called on security agencies to take proactive measures in upholding law and order, ensuring that those involved in unlawful acts are held accountable.
