Recent violence related to chieftaincy disputes in Nkwanta, located in the Oti Region, has resulted in heavy gunfire, causing residents to flee their homes. Security forces have been deployed to restore order. Nkwanta has once again become a hotspot for violence due to the ongoing chieftaincy conflict.
The latest outbreak of violence has led to heavy gunfire, forcing many residents to flee their homes in search of safety. This conflict, which stems from longstanding chieftaincy disputes, has previously caused significant unrest in the area. In January 2024, clashes between ethnic groups intensified during a traditional festival, resulting in at least 17 fatalities.
Despite attempts to negotiate peace, including agreements signed by traditional leaders, tensions have remained high. In response to the ongoing violence, a joint team of police and military personnel has been quickly deployed to Nkwanta to restore order.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the acting spokesperson for President John Mahama, has confirmed that additional troops are being deployed to maintain law and order. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents and urged the conflicting factions to lay down their arms and engage in dialogue. As security forces work to stabilize the situation, residents remain hopeful that ongoing peace efforts will help prevent further violence.
