When women work, the country works – Prof. Opoku-Agyemang

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has lauded the pivotal role women play in Ghana’s socio-economic development while calling for greater support, courage, and unity among women to overcome societal barriers. Addressing participants at a women empowerment series on Monday, November 18, held at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang spoke passionately on the theme ‘Advancing Gender Equality: A National Dialogue on Current Policies and Innovative Measures for Local and National Impact.’

Her speech highlighted the strides women have made in Ghana while addressing the persistent challenges that hinder their full participation in Ghana’s development.

She stressed that while women’s achievements are undeniable, the lack of adequate support systems and persistent societal prejudices continue to stifle their potential.

We must learn that when others dig into our [women’s] private lives instead of focusing on what we have done, we should know that it is a sign that they have lost the argument. We shouldn’t be afraid, we should collaborate and work together and when women work, the country works.

“When women achieve, our children go forward and these are the ingredients we need for the country to stand on its feet and not the petty divisions that are taking us nowhere.

“Sometimes, people ask all kinds of questions, such as, when a woman rises, how will she have a husband and a child? But I have to tell you to tell them that, that is not part of the job requirement.”
