We disagree with decision to ban export on grain – Peasant farmers

The Peasant Farmers Association is unhappy with the government’s recent decision to ban the export of key grains such as maize, rice, and soybeans. This comes after the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, announced the ban on these grains.

According to him, this measure will ensure food security within the country. Mr Acheampong’s directive comes in response to the ongoing dry spell that has devastated agricultural production in eight regions. But speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on August 26, the President of the Peasant Farmers, Bismark Owusu Nortey said the government decided without their input.

He explained that the farmers were key stakeholders in the sector, and it would have been right for them to be consulted so they could contribute to finding a lasting solution. “The first issue has to do with the government’s decision to ban the export of grains. I believe that this particular approach was not inclusive. They did not take into account the views, concerns, and possible challenges that this might have on farmers,” he said.

Mr Nortey indicated that often demand and supply determine the prices of grains on the market however, this ban would force farmers to sell their produce at cheap prices to prevent produce from spoiling in their barns. “If you are announcing a ban, the ideal thing is to put in place local measures that will insulate the farmers from any possible low prices,” he added.
