Tensions in Bawku escalated on Thursday, April 10, 2025, when unidentified youth vandalized and partially set fire to the residence of Mahama Ayariga, the Bawku Central Member of Parliament and Majority Leader. This incident occurred amid ongoing unrest related to a long-standing chieftaincy dispute in the town. Security sources confirmed that the military has intervened and taken strategic positions in the area to prevent further attacks.
The recent act of violence follows a deadly clash on Wednesday between youth groups and law enforcement, which resulted in one death and several injuries. The unrest reportedly began when youth from one faction ordered market women from a rival group to leave the area, leading to a confrontation with police and resulting in crossfire. The violence also involved the burning of the Bawku Divisional Police Commander’s residence and other police facilities. In response, authorities have increased patrols to stabilize the area, but the atmosphere remains tense.
