The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, has announced a significant expansion in the 2025 Senior High School (SHS) placement exercise. This includes the addition of 70 private Senior High Schools under the Free SHS pilot program, a notable increase from the previous 21 private schools available to students.
During a press briefing on Thursday, September 18, Dr. Apaak explained that this initiative aims to provide more opportunities for candidates who may not be able to secure placements in overcrowded public Category A schools. He encouraged students and parents to utilize the self-placement portal, which is now live, to choose from schools with available vacancies, including the newly added private institutions.
“This year, as part of the Free SHS Programme, we are piloting 70 private SHSs. Previously, only 21 private schools were available during the school selection process, but I am pleased to inform you that all 70 private schools are now accessible on the portal, offering more opportunities for students. In total, the placement program includes 724 public SHSs/SHTSs, 233 Technical and Vocational Institutions (TVIs), and 70 private SHSs under the pilot Free SHS Programme,” he stated.
The placement exercise covers 724 public SHSs and SHTSs, 233 Technical and Vocational Institutions (TVIs), and the 70 private SHSs, ensuring wider access to secondary education across the country.
Dr. Apaak reminded parents and guardians that placement is completely free and encouraged the use of official support channels for any guidance needed during the process.
This expansion is expected to ease pressure on oversubscribed public schools while giving students more choices and a better chance of continuing their education smoothly.
