Benefits of Drinking Coffee

If you’re a coffee lover, you’ll be pleased to know that your daily cup offers more than just a boost of energy. “Brewed coffee delivers antioxidants, including chlorogenic acid and other polyphenols,” explains registered dietitian Maddie Pasquariello, MS, RDN. These antioxidants help shield the body from cellular damage by neutralising free radicals, which may lower the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer. Registered dietitian Samantha Peterson, MS, RD, adds that coffee’s antioxidants also support brain health, metabolic function, and liver detox pathways. Benefits of Drinking Tea

Like coffee, caffeinated teas such as green and black tea are cherished morning staples—and they come with their own impressive health perks. According to registered dietitian Samantha Peterson, MS, RD, these teas are rich in powerful antioxidants: catechins like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in green tea and theaflavins in black tea. “These compounds support cardiovascular health, metabolic balance, hormonal regulation, and immune strength,” Peterson explains. Tea also offers a gentler energy boost thanks to L-theanine, an amino acid that fosters calm, focused alertness—without the jitters or cortisol spike that some people experience with coffee

Is Coffee or Tea the Better Morning Drink?

Here’s the twist: neither coffee nor tea holds the crown as the ultimate morning drink. “Overall, swapping tea for coffee—or the other way around—won’t make a major difference to your health if everything else stays the same,” explains registered dietitian Maddie Pasquariello, MS, RDN. While black coffee may deliver slightly more polyphenols and caffeine compared to black or green tea, nutrition is far more nuanced. “Your health is shaped by countless habits and factors, so you’re unlikely to see a significant impact on chronic disease prevention or overall wellness just by choosing one over the other,” Pasquariello adds.

How to Choose

So, if neither drink is technically “better,” how do you decide between coffee and tea? Registered dietitian Samantha Peterson, MS, RD, suggests considering factors like energy stability, mood, focus, digestion, and sleep quality. “It’s less about choosing the ‘right’ option and more about honouring your individual needs,” she explains. For instance, if you’re looking for a sharper cognitive boost or gearing up for demanding mental or physical work, coffee may be the stronger choice thanks to its quick energy lift. Peterson adds that it’s especially suitable for those who metabolise caffeine efficiently and don’t experience side effects such as anxiety, digestive discomfort, or disrupted sleep

Tea, on the other hand, delivers a calmer and more sustained energy lift. Pasquariello notes that this makes it a great alternative if coffee leaves you feeling jittery or unsettled—especially on an empty stomach. Peterson adds that tea may be the better choice if you wake up with anxiety, metabolize caffeine slowly, or are focusing on hormonal balance, adrenal health, or gut healing. Another perk: tea can help with hydration if plain water isn’t enough, though water should always be the foundation. “Ultimately, the best option depends on your body, your goals, and how you personally respond to caffeine,” Peterson concludes.
