Internet is bustling with questions about why women crave sex during PMS{ Premenstrual syndrome} or periods. No one is nearer to the solution but are we actually asking the right question? Getting horny during your PMS and period is unproductive: Is that the real problem? Is a woman’s body just for reproduction and nothing else? Are the women who feel these urges abominations?
Blame it on Hormones
Hormones are the driving force of your body. It shapes desire and sculpts personalities. So when it comes to something biological like period or PMS, doctors resort to them to explain the inexpiable. Where there is a ready solution for craving sex during ovulation, there isn’t much explainable condition for this. High progesterone levels dominate the ovulation period. Doctors explain that the body craves sex as that is the best time to conceive. But the chances of getting pregnant are thin when you are shedding the uterine lining. So when the solution eludes the doctors they blame it on a cocktail for hormones that are raging inside the woman’s body due to menstruation. But that seems suspicious: it’s like blaming the wind for air pollution.
It’s all in your mind
Talk about mansplaining women’s crisis. Whenever you put a question regarding your problems on the internet, or anywhere else for that matter, there is at least a man, assuming his hierarchical position, offering a solution.
Some guy recently drove the internet crazy by saying that using pads or tampons are a waste of resources and women should just hold it in while on their period. Well, maybe not all men, but some of them surely thinks that all women’s problems are in their heads. So the internet is filled with people reducing this urge for sex into something similar to ‘woman’s hysteria. Maybe it’s all in our minds, but why would it mean that the urges are not real?
Merely a matter of moisture
Physicians have taken a step further than hormones because that it really doesn’t fit in the scenario. They say that before and during the period, there is a lot of discharge that makes the whole area wet and slippery. Also, the area around the clitoris is swollen and heavy during this time. That amount of moisture and pressure on the clitoris causes friction near the vagina.
Therefore the wetness translates into arousal. Hmm, then we should feel aroused every time we take bath, or better still, every time we pee after holding it in for a long time. But that is not the case. We get wet when we are aroused, not the other way round. It’s like saying emissions of greenhouse gases is caused by global warming.
Naughty little rule breakers
It is also said that women who feel horny during PMS and period are just asking for something they cannot have. Most women suffer from mood swings and menstrual cramps during this time and that can really mess up their libido. But when some women feel the need to have sex during this time then it must be an abomination. They are the exception to the rule where women are supposed to be horny only when they are fertile. Even if we gingerly accept that, it doesn’t really provide an explanation, does it?
We are driven by animal instincts of food, shelter and procreation but that’s not all who we are. We are intelligent beings who seek out complex matters. We are even driven by pleasure for pleasure’s sake. Women are not equal to wombs, as Simone de Beauvoir would argue.
So maybe, just maybe, their bodies are not just baby-making machines. Maybe sexual passions are not always directly proportionate to fertility or to conceive. Sex is not just a compulsion for human beings; it is also a source of pleasure and emotional sustenance for many. If sex was only for procreation, then masturbation would have been dissatisfactory.
So women who feel aroused and horny before and during the period may just be looking for sex. It does seem logical, doesn’t it? So sit back and enjoy your orgasms, you are also a woman: not just the mother, not just the wife.
