The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man named Kwame Mananyi Tuanda for allegedly using a private ambulance to traffic large quantities of cannabis. The arrest took place on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, after extensive police surveillance. Officers intercepted a Hyundai Hiace private ambulance with the registration number GX 277-20 in front of the Jamboree Drinking Spot at Labadi Maami.

According to a police statement, the suspect claimed ownership of both the vehicle and its contents and was found standing next to the ambulance. A search of the vehicle revealed several sacks containing dried leaves believed to be cannabis. Upon examination, police discovered 700 parcels and 473 wrappers of the suspected narcotics.
Preliminary investigations revealed that an ambulance had been loaded with illegal substances in Kpando, located in the Volta North Region, and transported to Accra for distribution. The suspect, Tuanda, admitted to engaging in this activity since last year. Further investigations disclosed that he originally purchased the vehicle as a regular car but later fitted it with a siren and branded it as an ambulance.

Before acquiring the Hyundai Hiace, he allegedly used a Toyota Highlander for the same purpose. The police noted that he also operated the vehicle for transporting deceased bodies alongside his drug trafficking activities. The ambulance has since been impounded, and the seized items are being sent to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis. The suspect is currently being processed for court as investigations continue.
The Accra Regional Police Command cautioned the public against the abuse of legitimate service vehicles for criminal purposes and reaffirmed its commitment to clamping down on drug trafficking.
