Over 100 unlicensed motorbike couriers impounded in Accra

The Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission has impounded over 100 unlicensed motorbike couriers operating in Accra. This operation follows the resumption of enforcement activities after a temporary suspension in August 2025 by the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations. The directive mandates that all courier companies and individual delivery riders register, obtain licenses, and be onboarded onto the Integrated Courier and Logistics Management System (ICOLMS-Ghana).

The affected riders were issued a spot fine of GH¢600 each before their motorbikes were released. In an interview with Channel One News on Tuesday, April 21, the Public Relations Manager of the Commission, Nii Yeboah Burgesson, stated, “Roughly more than 100 motorbikes have been impounded. We are working in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service. Although we are a commission, the authority to intercept and impound motorbikes lies with the Ghana Police Service.

They work alongside us to retrieve the motorbikes, while we manage the administrative process. The fine is GH¢600, while registration costs GH¢570. So why wouldn’t I choose to register and have the freedom to work the entire year?”

“But wait, for such an exercise I pay a penalty, then I start the process all over again. We are not here to penalise anyone. We are just here to enforce the law. So this is an opportunity for you to go on the platform and then commence your registration processes.” He said the exercise initially met resistance but was brought under control with the support of the Police. He further noted that some of the affected riders have since begun the licensing process to regularise their operations.
