MTN Ghana is advising its millions of Mobile Money users to prepare for a six-hour service disruption scheduled for Sunday, August 17, 2025. The telecommunications company has announced that all Mobile Money services will be unavailable from 12:00 AM to 6:00 AM to conduct a critical system upgrade. This planned downtime will affect all aspects of the Mobile Money platform, including deposits, withdrawals, person-to-person transfers, and merchant payments.
This announcement comes as a significant advisory for Ghana, where MTN Mobile Money has become the primary financial tool for a vast majority of the population, handling billions of cedis in transactions and serving as a key driver of financial inclusion.
In an interview with Citi FM, Charles Asamoah Assah, Chief Technology & Service Delivery Officer of Mobile Money Limited, stated, “Please be informed of a planned system upgrade on August 17, 2025, from 12 midnight to 6 AM. During this period, all Mobile Money services will be unavailable. This upgrade is intended to improve our services to you. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding.”
The upgrade aims to enhance service delivery, with previous system improvements focusing on increasing transaction speeds, strengthening platform security against fraud, and enabling new digital services. MTN Ghana has assured its customers that normal operations will resume immediately after the maintenance window closes, and all funds will remain safe and secure.
This is an important reminder for businesses and individuals who rely heavily on mobile money for their daily financial activities, highlighting the need to complete any urgent transactions before the scheduled outage.
