Kumasi: Police arrest robbery gang, kills one in shoot-out

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a notorious armed robbery gang that was involved in a series of violent residential robberies throughout the region. During the arrest of the suspected robbers, one suspect sustained gunshot wounds in an exchange of fire with the police and was later pronounced dead at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Another suspect, identified as Yahaya Nuhu, remains at large and is currently being actively pursued.

A rapid response from joint patrol teams from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) District Police and the Regional Operations unit provided significant leads to the Police Intelligence Department (PID), which led to the arrest of the suspects on Friday, June 27, 2025, at about 11:30 a.m.

Key suspects arrested from their hideouts in connection with the robberies include Kwadwo Kyei Baffour, 39; Joseph Oppong, alias Joe, 30; and Bernard Owusu Ansah, alias Hot Boy, 27. During interrogation, Kwadwo Kyei Baffour admitted to participating in the robberies and confessed to raping a victim during one of the incidents.

Subsequently, Kwadwo Konadu, 28; James Asare Boateng, 26; Emmanuel Asiedu, 27; Maxwell Gyimah, 30; and Daniel Dwumor were also rounded up. One of the suspects, Bernard Owusu Ansah, is currently receiving medical treatment under armed police guard at KATH.

Robbery areas

Briefing the media on Monday, [June 30, 2025], the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Emmanuel Teye Cudjoe said the action followed multiple reports of armed robbery incidents in Abuakwa, Tanoso, Apatrapa, Dechembuoso, Appiadu and surrounding areas. He said investigations revealed that the suspects, armed with pump-action guns, pistols, and other offensive weapons, forcibly entered residential homes, held victims and their families’ hostage, and robbed them of large sums of money, electronic devices, and other valuable items.

Items retrieved

Items retrieved from the suspects included multiple laptops, tablets, and mobile phones wristwatches, television sets, WiFi routers and three vehicles including Kia Morning and two Toyota Corollas cars with registration numbers GX 4388-19 and AS 4777-22.

Others are Taurus pistol (ACC721513) with 4 rounds of 9mm ammunition, NP Cal 9x19mm pistol (No. 11501418), Jojeff pump-action shotgun (No. 8782) with 33 rounds of ammunition, among others.

DCOP Cudjoe commended the public for its cooperation and support, and reassured all residents within the metropolis of the service’s unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order in the region. Meanwhile, all the suspects are currently in police custody and would be arraigned before court to face prosecution.
