Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed his support for the new Majority Leader, James Agalga, in Parliament. However, he emphasised that his main goal is to transform the Minority Caucus into the Majority. Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, August 27, after Agalga officially took on the role of Majority Leader, Afenyo-Markin stated that he would not obstruct his counterpart’s efforts but would instead provide alternative perspectives on government matters.
“I want you to know that you can count on me as a friend. My role is not to obstruct you but to offer viewpoints that may help you see things differently,” he said. Afenyo-Markin also committed to approaching parliamentary debates with thorough research, highlighting that his position as Minority Leader involves scrutinising government decisions and presenting alternative positions.
“I promise to deliver well-researched information for all my debates. That is my commitment,” he added. Although he maintained a conciliatory tone, Afenyo-Markin made it clear that his support for Agalga would not undermine the political objectives of the Minority Caucus. He stated that his primary responsibility is to strengthen the Minority and ultimately achieve a majority in Parliament.
“My job really, my job really is to turn this Minority into Majority. That really is my job,” he stressed. He subsequently cautioned Agalga against attempts to weaken or infiltrate the Minority Caucus as he began his tenure as Majority Leader.
Agalga officially assumed the position of Majority Leader following a communication from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin announcing changes to the leadership of the NDC Parliamentary Caucus. The changes followed the nomination of former Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
