The management of SONABEL, the power-generating company in Burkina Faso, has announced that the controlled spillage of water from the Bagre Dam will now take place on Monday, August 25, 2025, instead of the earlier date of Wednesday, August 27, 2025. According to SONABEL, the change in schedule has become necessary due to a sudden surge in the dam’s water level, which has now reached 90.24 percent of its filling capacity. The dam recorded a water elevation of 234.27 meters as of August 23, 2025.
In a statement issued by the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and copied to the media, communities along the White Volta River and surrounding areas were advised to take precautionary measures ahead of the spillage. The Commission urged residents to comply with safety guidelines issued by local assemblies and other relevant state agencies to minimize the risks of flooding and safeguard lives and property.
