Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has announced plans to provide designated trading spaces for hawkers operating in unauthorized areas of the Central Business District (CBD) within the next two months. This announcement follows an ongoing decongestion exercise aimed at improving traffic flow and enhancing sanitation throughout the capital. The operation, called “Red Line,” includes designated zones for pedestrian movement and regulated trading activities.
Speaking to Citi News on Wednesday, May 21, during a site inspection of the demarcation process, the Mayor reiterated his commitment to sustaining the exercise until its intended goals are fully realised. “Because things are in a rush, we have to make a hasty decision. I know this will help things in the meantime. Within a month or two, I will try and get a place for them.” I didn’t ask the traders to sell on the street, and again, they know better that where they are is not the right place to sell. They should come to the market,” he stated.
