Renowned security consultant, Prof. Kwesi Aning, has attributed the significant support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 elections to widespread anger and frustration with the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government.
Prof. Aning’s comments come in the wake of Mahama’s massive electoral win, which many are calling a record-breaking victory in Ghana’s electoral history. The outcome reflects growing discontent among Ghanaians, particularly after months of protests and strikes from various sectors, including government and private institutions, demanding better working conditions and addressing economic challenges under the current administration.
Speaking on GHOne TV, Prof. Aning emphasized that the election outcome reflects a combination of protest votes, deep-seated frustration, and anger, as well as a desire for change. He noted that the outgoing government’s tactics, including using hunger politics and diverting millions of dollars for hunger relief, have contributed to the widespread discontent.
Prof. Aning stressed that the 2024 election results not only represent a call for change but also a response to the perceived failures of the previous government. He noted, “The amount of work that needs to be done to reset this country is enormous.
The outgoing regime had used hunger and economic hardship as political tools. They created the illusion of widespread hunger, diverting millions of dollars for so-called hunger relief in the north, which turned out to be a misuse of funds. What we’re seeing now in the election results is a combination of protest votes, deep frustration, and an overwhelming desire for change. This is a clear message to the incoming president and his team that the anger in the country is palpable.”
