Presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has unveiled a bold and inclusive roadmap to rejuvenate the party’s grassroots base ahead of the January 31, 2026, presidential primaries. The plan, structured around five strategic pillars, seeks to foster internal unity and enhance the party’s electoral competitiveness.
Speaking to an audience of nearly 700 delegates at the Asato Community Centre in the Akan Constituency of the Oti Region, the former Vice-President introduced what he termed a “new deal for the NPP grassroots.” This initiative, he noted, is grounded in principles of empowerment, transparency, and equitable participation, and is designed to strengthen local party structures and broaden engagement across all levels.
Electoral strength
He said the NPP’s electoral strength lay in its polling station executives and constituency-level co-ordinators, who deserved structured support and recognition for their commitment to the party’s success. “Our grassroots are the lifeblood of the NPP. We must build a system that recognises their sacrifices, supports their welfare, and gives them a direct stake in governance,” he said.
Welfare
Presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to introduce a comprehensive welfare database aimed at supporting polling station executives and electoral area coordinators. The initiative, he noted, would be subject to quarterly reviews to uphold principles of fairness, inclusivity, and transparency.
As part of his broader decentralisation agenda, Dr. Bawumia further announced that a designated share of national appointments—including roles such as Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Ambassadors, Ministers, and Deputy Ministers—would be equitably distributed across constituencies nationwide to deepen grassroots representation in governance.
He said that measure, estimated to create about 3,000 opportunities, was expected to strengthen the connection between government and the grassroots. Constituency budget. Dr Bawumia proposed the introduction of a “Constituency Budget” system to empower local areas to directly address development priorities. That approach, he explained, would shift national planning from a top-down model to one driven by local needs.
To maintain unity and pre-empt discontent, he announced plans to institutionalise regular constituency-level town hall meetings. These forums would provide space to identify and resolve internal challenges before they escalated. The former Vice-President also vowed to reform the party’s election financing model by ensuring campaign funds were transferred directly into official constituency accounts.
That, he said, would eliminate intermediaries, promote accountability and guarantee that every cedi was used to support mobilisation efforts. Dr Bawumia described the proposed reforms as a “paradigm shift” that would make the NPP stronger, fairer and more responsive to its members’ needs.
Vision
A former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kadjebi, Kofi Adjei Ntim, commended Dr Bawumia for his commitment to empowering the party’s grassroots. He said the former Vice-President had demonstrated vision, humility and dedication to the NPP’s progress, qualities that made him well-placed to lead the party into the 2028 elections. Mr Ntim, therefore, urged delegates to rally behind Dr Bawumia to consolidate the NPP’s unity and build on the gains made over the years.
