Ghana faces peak flood season – Ghana Meteorological Agency

Ghana is expected to experience more heavy rainfall in the coming weeks, with June marking the peak of the country’s major rainy season, a meteorologist has cautioned. Frederick Cudjoe of the Ghana Meteorological Agency explained that recent downpours in Accra, which recorded over 60mm of rainfall, align with seasonal patterns but pose heightened flood risks due to already saturated ground conditions.

“The ground is already saturated, so any additional rainfall can easily trigger flash floods,” he said on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday, June 8. Cudjoe indicated that at least two to four more significant rainstorms are expected before the end of June, alongside intermittent rainfall in the coming days.

He further noted that climate change is intensifying weather patterns, with rising temperatures increasing atmospheric moisture and contributing to heavier rainfall. “We are seeing increasing night-time and daytime temperatures, which means more water vapour and more rainfall activity,” he explained.

The agency issues multiple daily forecasts and early warnings, but Cudjoe urged the public to actively follow updates via media platforms and official channels. He also cautioned residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to higher ground during heavy rains and warned motorists and pedestrians against moving through floodwaters. “Let’s stay indoors as much as possible when conditions are severe,” he advised.
