Former Information Minister, Fati Abubakar, has cautioned Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh over his directive to suspend Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). The suspension, which followed KATH’s temporary halt of emergency admissions, has provoked backlash and triggered industrial action by doctors and nurses, raising concerns about healthcare delivery in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show, Abubakar urged the Health Minister to exercise restraint: “I will caution the health minister to take his time; he should try and step on the brakes. It’s an honour for young guys to be given an appointment, but we should try to avoid over-exuberance.”
She emphasised that staffing and infrastructure challenges in hospitals are the responsibility of government, not medical professionals. “Understaffing is not the responsibility of doctors; it is government who recruits health professionals. Doctors don’t buy beds; it is the duty of government to provide infrastructure,” she added.
